Cook Pharmica is the 2017 ISPE Facility of the Year Winner for Equipment Innovation for their Flexible Filling Line Project located in Bloomington, IN, USA. Projects selected in the Equipment Innovation category exemplify the novel application of commercially available and custom developed process manufacturing and facility management tools to achieve superior results, advanced process understanding, and improved competitive position. Cook Pharmica, a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), located in the Midwest, provides biopharmaceutical companies a unique ‘One-Source, One-Location’ model for development, clinical or commercial cell culture manufacturing, parenteral product manufacturing, and secondary packaging.
Their winning project was a complex manufacturing upgrade, within an existing operation, to complement its existing syringe and vial lines with first-of-its-kind flexible filling technology, in just 29 months. The project is an exceptional example of a company helping to lead the pharmaceutical industry in the adoption of ready-to-use vials (and cartridges) and applying next generation robotics technology uniquely to create unparalleled flexibility. Cook Pharmica’s version of flexible filling would not only add additional capacity, but enable better service to its customers, through that flexibility, to benefit patients.
The success of the project was made possible through a collaboration with OPTIMA Pharma, Nuova Ompi, and IPS – Integrated Project Services, LLC. All parties collaborated on the equipment design, creatively navigated the design and project schedule, and brought their full organizational resources to deliver on the promise of new technology while expanding the availability and exposure of ready-to-use components in the market. ISPE congratulations Cook Pharmica’s team for their achievements and their FOYA award winning entry for Equipment Innovation.
